Cowboys have work to do to reclaim NFC East after winning a playoff game

The Dallas Cowboys aren’t recognized for stringing collectively profitable seasons, which on the floor makes this final marketing campaign a constructive one. The Cowboys received 12 video games once more, went to the playoffs for consecutive seasons for the primary time since 2006-07, and took the step of successful a highway playoff recreation for the primary time since 1992.

These numerical stats have been thrown round loads main as much as the Divisional Spherical towards the 49ers, however by the tip of 4 quarters the one quantity that continues to matter is 1995. That season nonetheless stands because the Cowboys final NFC Championship look and Super Bowl, and the usual of what counts as a profitable season in Dallas hasn’t modified since.

This makes it particularly regarding that the Cowboys successful 12 video games in 2022 solely earned them second place in a division that hasn’t had a repeat winner in over a decade. This was a mark adequate for the highest spot within the division by three video games simply the yr earlier than. The remainder of the NFC East drafted as if Dallas was the group to beat whereas the Cowboys appeared additional forward at a playoff rematch with the 49ers.

This plan each labored and backfired on the similar time. The Cowboys deserve reward for being higher ready for the most recent playoff matchup with the 49ers, enjoying as a extra bodily group towards the run and being higher ready for his or her inside strain. This recreation nonetheless got here right down to a well-known place the Cowboys have put themselves in underneath Dak Prescott, counting on the benefit he offers them on the most influential place on the sphere to be sufficient.

Not solely was this not sufficient towards Brock Purdy and San Francisco, nevertheless it additionally didn’t have the identical impact in division play for Dallas, which misplaced to Jalen Hurts and the Eagles in addition to Sam Howell and the Commanders. If it’s true that each the Cowboys and their fast rivals all took a step up this season, the query of the offseason for this entrance workplace turns into how well-positioned they’re to take yet one more step.

It might be barely too early to quantify this with any pending free agent names or draft technique, however the truth the Cowboys are dealing with eerily related personnel choices to final offseason shouldn’t be a terrific begin. Jerry Jones stated himself on the finish of final season that he doesn’t need to wait till the purpose his group is at now to speak about methods to enhance, however the identical obtrusive positions of want persist at huge receiver and offensive line. By prioritizing the draft as a lot as they do, the Cowboys miss out on the enhancements that groups utilizing free company and trades make in a rush.

With the Eagles trying to maintain success with a stacked roster round Jalen Hurts, and the Giants forward of schedule underneath Brian Daboll and Daniel Jones, the Cowboys have their work minimize out simply to maintain tempo within the division. The constructive Mike McCarthy pattern would say he’s on tempo to win an extra playoff recreation subsequent season and break the championship recreation drought, whereas the destructive says the Cowboys will fall one other spot within the East and be in peril of lacking the playoffs. A veteran coach like McCarthy ought to know the significance of capitalizing when you may within the playoffs, now prone to dropping each of his coordinators to move teaching jobs. This can be a telling offseason for McCarthy to show he has the organizational affect to have this group take a extra “all-in” method.

McCarthy’s Packers have been one-and-done within the playoffs twice following his Tremendous Bowl win in 2010, and again to again misses in 2017 and 2018 ended his time in Inexperienced Bay. The Cowboys nonetheless have a window with a robust nucleus of younger expertise, however want to point out early this offseason they’re motivated to be taught from errors which have now price them two seasons in a row. Having their positions of want clearly minimize out for them once more ought to set Dallas up for a robust offseason.

Free company and the draft are nonetheless an extended methods away, however first the Cowboys should watch one among their division rivals host a playoff rival in an NFC Championship recreation that the group had such excessive hopes of enjoying in simply final Sunday.
